This past week I had the opportunity to attend my first photography convention. To say I was excited was an understatement. I’ve wanted to go to a convention for years, but for some reason never believed I’d be able to go. It’s crazy what your mind can trick you into believing.
The Professional Photographers of America’s (PPA) Imaging USA convention didn’t disappoint. From the welcoming signs when we arrived at the hotel, the music they had playing in the registration area, the educational classes and the parties it was a great first convention.
When I realized I was going to have the opportunity to attend the convention, I began preparing. For months I reviewed the classes I wanted to take. I decided I wanted to take as many business classes as I could. I found so many classes I was interested in taking there was no way I’d be able to attend all of them.
One of the classes I took was titled The Psychology of Success. (I love how much psychology is related to photography and running a business). During this class we learned about how our mindset, our way of thinking, can impact our ability to achieve our goals in life. It’s hard to condense such a great class into a few sentences. I think the quote by Henry Ford is a great summary of what we learned “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right”.
It really is interesting what our mind can do to us. I wanted to take business classes because I believe I don’t know enough about running a business. Yet, after each class I took, I walked away slightly disappointed that I didn’t learn any groundbreaking information. It was after my second or third class like this I realized . . . . I know more than I think I do.
Through the experience of taking business classes that reaffirmed what I already know and the psychology in some of the other classes I learned one great lesson. I don’t need to listen to the negative voices in my head telling me I’m not good enough. And if I’d learned nothing else that lesson alone was the price of admission to the convention.
